About 50 people injured in Macedonia earthquake

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck an area just outside Macedonia's capital Skopje on Sunday, leaving about 50 people injured, local Sitel TV reported.

The US Geological Service said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres at 1310 hours local time.

Residents said that windows shattered, cracks appeared on walls and there was panic.

Sitel TV said that people were injured as they tried to escape their homes. They were admitted to hospital, mostly with fractures.

Skopje was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1963 when over 1,000 people were killed.
