AfD politician born in Bosnia under investigation

Police in Freiburg have searched the flat of Dubravko Mandic, a lawyer and politician of the right-populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, as part of an investigation of this Sarajevo native for insults, German media reported on Saturday.

The state prosecution in Karlsruhe said in a statement that, after several criminal complaints for insult, it had searched the flat of an AfD politician in Freiburg, confiscating a laptop.

A number of media said the politician was Mandic, who has been sued for insults by leading politicians of the Greens party, Claudia Roth, Cem Oezdemir and Antun Hofreiter.

Mandic recently posted on his Facebook page a photomontage of a famous photograph from the Nuremberg trials, switching the heads of leading Nazis with those of current politicians, including Chancellor Angela Merkel and the three Greens officials.

The AfD's Baden-Wuerttemberg branch condemned the conduct of the authorities, saying the photomontage was a "polemic and satirical" criticism of the work of leading politicians. The party said the police search was an attack on freedom of opinion and that the authorities were trying to shut up the politicians who bothered them.

"In Turkey, people are imprisoned for stating their opinion, as Mandic did. Do the deputies Roth, Oezdemir and Hofreiter want Turkish conditions in Germany?", the branch said.

Mandic is a lawyer born to Bosnian immigrants. As an AfD politician, he has attracted public attention several times with his dramatic statements.
