Bosnia local elections held in line with regulations

Municipal elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina were held entirely in line with regulations and without particular difficulties, with the exception of Stolac, where voting had to be stopped because of physical conflicts, Central Election Commission president Ahmet Santic said in Sarajevo on Monday.

"Except for Stolac, there were no major irregularities," Santic told a press conference.

The turnout in Sunday's vote was a little under 54%.

Earlier, the Pod Lupom coalition of non-governmental organisations said there had been several physical assaults on voting committee members and that observers had intervened in over 90 "critical situations." Coalition director Dario Jovanovic said there had not been any violence of this kind for "over ten years."

Santic refuted such assessments, calling them "incorrect and blanket." He said an investigation was under way into the incident in Stolac, where a Bosniak candidate for municipal head, Salmir Kaplan, physically clashed with the president of the municipal election commission, Ivan Peric. Police said Kaplan hit Peric, while Kaplan said he was provoked by irregularities during voting.
