Bosnia set to submit EU membership application by January's end

Bosnia and Herzegovina's three-member presidency's chairman Dragan Covic has said that his country will submit the EU member candidate application by the end of January 2016 and he expects the European Union to formally recognise the country as candidate in early 2017, thus granting Bosnia candidate status.

"I am confident that by the end of January 2016 we will submit the application for EU membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina wants to use this time for its journey towards the EU," Covic said on Saturday.

He said he was aware that there were various opinions inside the European bloc about its further enlargement.

Covic added that EU candidate status as well as the activation of NATO's Membership Action Plan would boost investments in the country.

The presidency chairman is hopeful that NATO's MAP for Bosnia may be activated in June.

In order to submit the EU membership application, Bosnia's authorities must adopt a mechanism of coordination regulating the adoption of the EU acquis communautaire and adjust the Stabilisation and Association Agreement so as to reintroduce traditional quotas for the import of custom-free commodities primarily from Croatia.
