Bosnian national killed in Iraq fighting on side of IS

A national of Bosnia and Herzegovina was killed fighting on the side of the Islamic State terrorist organisation in Iraq, as a commander of a paramilitary unit, having previously been convicted of terrorism in Bosnia and Herzegovina, official sources said on Wednesday.

"According to the latest, unconfirmed information, Bajro Ikanovic was killed in the past few days in Iraq," the State Protection and Investigation Agency (SIPA) said.

A warrant for Ikanovic's arrest was issued in 2014.

In 2007 a Bosnian court sentenced Ikanovic, a member of the radical Wahhabi movement, for preparing a terrorist attack. The media close to radical Islamic circles in the country have claimed that Ikanovic commanded an IS unit made up mostly of Muslims from Bosnia and Herzegovina and other Balkan countries.

According to official reports, around 50 nationals of Bosnia and Herzegovina have been killed fighting on the side of Islamic State so far.
