Bosnian security minister urges regional cooperation in combating terrorism

Bosnian Security Minister Dragan Mektic said in Sarajevo on Friday that Bosnia and Herzegovina was taking measures to punish all returnees from the Syrian and Iraqi war zones who were considered a major security threat.

Speaking at a conference of members of the region's parliamentary committees tasked with the European integration policy, he called on them to support an initiative which would deal with the issue of those returnees through better cooperation and coordination. He said terrorism was a common problem which should be dealt with through stronger cooperation.

He confirmed that 18 indictments had been filed in Bosnia against persons who had fought abroad in the ranks of terrorist groups, and that another 20 indictments were expected to be filed in the days ahead. He added that some returnees decided to cooperate with the security agencies and plead guilty.

Mektic called on the parliamentarians from the region to take this problem seriously. "We need to establish a regional initiative and network so that we can all consider the problem of terrorism together, exchanging intelligence and combating this problem."

He also confirmed that the interior ministers of the Brdo Process states would sign in Slovenia on April 17-18 a declaration on a joint fight against terrorism which will serve as a basis for operational cooperation between the security agencies.
