Bosnian Serb authorities opposed to radioactive waste disposal in Croatian border area

The government of the Bosnian Serb entity, Republika Srpska (RS), has adopted a draft resolution opposing Croatia's plan to build a radioactive waste storage facility in Dvor municipality near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"All competent institutions in RS and in Bosnia and Herzegovina should take a united stance and take all the necessary steps to prevent any activities at that location in order to prevent the interests of RS and Bosnia and Herzegovina and protect public safety and health and the constitutionally guaranteed right to a healthy environment," the RS government said in a statement carried by local media on Sunday.

The proposed resolution has been sent to the RS parliament for consideration.

The state government, known as the Bosnia and Herzegovina Council of Ministers, said earlier that Croatia had not requested official consultations on the possible construction of a radioactive waste storage facility on Mount Trgovska Gora near the border between the two countries, warning that Croatia had thus violated its international obligations.

The state regulator was instructed to address with the Croatian authorities all disputed issues concerning possible radioactive waste disposal on Mount Trgovska Gora and to report on it as soon as possible, while the Foreign Ministry was to request all information from Croatia regarding the planned construction.
