Bosnian Serb parliament adopts report on referendum, no decision on further steps

The parliament of the Bosnian Serb entity of Republika Srpska on Tuesday adopted a report on the implementation of a referendum in the entity, held on 25 September, noting that the vote was successful and that a majority voted in favour of marking January 9 as Republika Srpska Day, but no decision was made regarding possible steps following the referendum.

The contentious referendum caused tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina as it breached the law and decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bosnian Chief State Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the referendum, saying that its implementation constitutes a crime which carries a prison sentence of between six months and five years.

Deputies in the Serb entity parliament completely ignored the fact that the investigation was launched and unanimously adopted the report by the commission in charge of organising the referendum.

Croat and Bosniak members of the Republika Srpska parliament boycotted the debate on the implementation of the referendum, calling on the state authorities to protect the constitutional order of the country and the implementation of the Dayton Agreement and sanction all those responsible for organising the referendum.
