Bosnian Serb wartime police commander arrested for Srebrenica genocide

A wartime commander of Bosnian Serb police forces that participated in the genocide against Muslims in Srebrenica was arrested in that eastern Bosnian town on Tuesday on suspicion of war crimes.

Bosnian prosecutorial authorities confirmed the arrest of 65-year-old Milan Bogdanovic, who in 1995 was the commander of the police station in Skelani near Srebrenica and headed a special police unit whose members committed crimes against humanity after Srebrenica, at the time a UN safe haven, fell into the hands of Serb forces, after which more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were massacred.

In July 1995 Bogdanovic coordinated and commanded police units which in the area of Konjevic Polje captured Muslims trying to break out of the besieged town. The captured men were separated from women and children and detained.

It has been established that men under Bogdanovic's command handed over at least 500 captured Muslims to military police who then executed them. They themselves tortured a group of 16 prisoners and shot them dead and subsequently executed dozens of prisoners.

Boganovic is charged with the unlawful detention and disappearance of seven captured Muslims. The prisoners were kept at Skelani and subjected to forced labour, after which they disappeared. The bodies of some of them were found in a mass grave in the village of Glogova, Bratunac municipality, after the war.
