Bosnian state court upholds ban to RS authorities to use electoral roll for referendum

The Appeals Chamber of the State Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday upheld a decision of the State Electoral Commission (SIP) to reject the request of the authorities of the Bosnian Serb entity to forward the electoral roll to them which they intended to use for a referendum planned for 25 September on the issue of the entity's national day, local media reported.

The Appeals Chamber said the ad hoc commission for the implementation of the referendum, formed by the Republika Srpska Parliament is not a body that is legally authorised to access the electoral roll, dismissing the appeal against the SIP decision.

The decision adopted today is final and cannot be appealed.

The president of the Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, said earlier today the entity did not intend to back out of conducting the referendum, dismissing warnings from the ambassadors of several western countries who told Dodik in Banja Luka that such a referendum was violating the Constitution and laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
