Charity: Report on child abuse at refugee camps "vastly exaggerated"

Claims of sexual abuse of children at refugee camps in Greece is "vastly exaggerated" according to the head of the charity Doctors of the World (Medecins du Monde).

Nikitas Kanakis said he was angered by a Sunday report in British weekly The Observer quoting volunteers who said children in Greek refugee camps were being abused and were too afraid to leave the tents at night.

"We have a round-the-clock presence in 14 camps. This kind of abuse, as quoted in the report, never took place," Kanakis said.

The Doctors of the World head said that apart from two incidents currently being investigated, there was no evidence of child abuse taking place at Greek refugee camps, where thousands of migrants are being housed in tents.

Kanakis urged for caution with reports like these, which he said were being used by extremists in Europe to support their opinions that "migrants are all criminals."

"It is dangerous to say 'someone told me this' or 'I heard that' without naming names," Kanakis said.

The charities quoted in the report, which confirmed they had heard of sexual violence in the camps, could not immediately be reached for comment on Sunday due to an upcoming national holiday on Monday.
