Chinese president to start his European tour in Belgrade

Serbia's President Tomislav Nikolic and Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on Monday held separate talks with Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Haixing on Chinese President Xi Jinping visit to Serbia, scheduled for June, with which the Chinese president is to start his European tour.

Liu said the fact the Chinese president would start his European tour by visiting Serbia bore evidence of the importance Serbia had for China.

Liu stressed at the talks with Vucic that the visit of the Chinese president to Belgrade was of great importance, being the first such visit after 32 years.

Vucic said that the visit by the Chinese president would confirm the good relations between the two countries, which, he said, would be even better in the future.

Xi's visit to Serbia was announced by Vucic at a recent ceremony at which a contract was signed on the sale of the Smederevo Steel Mill to a Chinese company, when he said that it would confirm the increasingly good cooperation between the two countries.

The Serbian government's public relations office said in a statement that topics discussed ahead of Xi's visit were bilateral relations and cooperation in infrastructure, energy and telecommunications projects.

Many Chinese companies work on infrastructure projects in Serbia, one of the most important ones being a bridge on the Danube River, built upstream from Belgrade.

The 1.5 kilometre Zemun-Borca bridge, with 21.6 kilometres of access roads, was inaugurated on 18 December 2014, ahead of a summit between China and 16 Central and Eastern European countries, held in Belgrade.

The Serbian government's public relations office said Vucic had expressed a wish to visit with the Chinese president the Smederevo Steel Mill "as the most important example of the successful cooperation between the two countries."
