Coordination mechanism for relations with the EU fully agreed by Bosnia's authorities

Officials of Bosnia and Herzegovina's state-level government and the governments of the two entities on Wednesday reached agreement on the coordination mechanism for relations with the EU.

The agreement is a central component of the country’s efforts to become an EU acceding candidate.

The prime minister in the state-level Council of Ministers, Denis Zvizdic, said that full agreement had been reached on how Bosnia and Herzegovina would adopt decisions during accession negotiations with the European Union.

"The text of the coordination mechanism has been fully finalised. This is the result of the joint work of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the two entity governments as well as other participants in this process," Zvizdic said.

The coordination mechanism should now be formally endorsed by the Council and the governments in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Srpska.

Approving the coordination mechanism is one of the main conditions the EU has set in order to consider Bosnia's application credible. The country submitted the request to be given EU candidate status in February.

Of the countries in the region that are on the journey towards the EU, only Bosnia and Kosovo have still not been granted candidate status.

On the other hand, Slovenia and Croatia are full members, the former entering the Union in 2004 and the latter in 2013.
