Croatia, Bosnia to ink European partnership deal

Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will soon sign a European partnership agreement as a framework for Croatia's support to Bosnia's efforts to join the European Union, after Sarajevo recently requested to be awarded the status of EU membership candidate, Foreign Ministers Miro Kovac of Croatia and Igor Crnadak of Bosnia and Herzegovina said in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The two ministers held talks on the sidelines of a meeting of the visiting Bosnian three-member Presidency with Croatia's President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic in her office.

"Being a signatory to the Dayton Agreement, Croatia has a particular responsibility for Bosnia and Herzegovina and wants to actively support its admission to the European Union. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a strong partner in Croatia in efforts to implement all those reforms necessary for accomplishing the objective of the country's entry into the EU," Kovac was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry.

Sarajevo applied for the status of membership candidate in mid-February. Kovac and Crnadak discussed the signing of the European partnership agreement in this context.

"After my inaugural visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, this meeting is a confirmation of our commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation as the closest neighbours," Kovac added.

The meetings also prove the continuity of Croatia's foreign policy towards Bosnia and Herzegovina as a stable country with three constituent peoples living on an equal footing, according to the Croatian minister.
