Croatia, Bosnia sign agreement on cooperation in environmental protection

Croatia's Environment and Nature Protection Minister Slaven Dobrovic and Bosnia and Herzegovina's Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, Mirko Sarovic, signed in Zagreb on Wednesday an agreement on cooperation in environmental protection and sustainable development, the Croatian ministry said in a statement.

"This agreement facilitates cooperation in the protection of the environment and efforts to deal with outstanding issues, primarily problems such as air pollution in Slavonski Brod and the construction of the Dabar hydroelectric power plant which could negatively affect the Neretva River valley, and we expect concrete progress in that regard. Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the process of integration with the European Union and will have to adopt and implement EU standards relating to environmental protection, in which we can help it with our experience," Dobrovic said.

Sarovic called for starting with the implementation of the agreement without delay for the sake of "responsible, wise and sustainable management of resources and the environment."

The agreement refers to cooperation in the process of Bosnia and Herzegovina's integration with the EU and exchange of experience in the implementation of international conventions and treaties referring to environmental protection and the protection of climate, air, water and soil, waste management, waste water and chemicals treatment, nature protection and education about environmental protection.
