EP discusses Bosnia's progress towards EU

Members of the European Parliament, during a plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, called on Bosnia and Herzegovina to persist in implementing reforms on its path towards European Union membership.

Enlargement Commission Johannes Hahn welcomed the resolution on the progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will be put to a vote on Thursday, saying that it well reflected the situation in the country, in particular its return to the path of reform.

He also welcomed support for the EU's new approach to Bosnia and Herzegovina, notably the focus on socio-economic reforms and reforms relating to the rule of law and public administration, as provided for in the 2015-2018 reform programme which Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted in July 2015.

Hahn called on Bosnia and Herzegovina to set up an effective mechanism to coordinate its relations with the EU and to align its Stabilisation and Association Agreement after Croatia joined the bloc in order to normalise trade with the EU.

The commissioner urged Bosnia and Herzegovina to continue implementing the reform programme not just as the key condition for its EU integration but also in the best interests of its citizens. He said that the Commission had taken note of Bosnia and Herzegovina's membership application, submitted on February 15, adding that it was yet another sign of the country's commitment to the reform process.

In their speeches, Croatian MEPs also called on Bosnia and Herzegovina to continue reforms and stressed the need for the country to change its constitution to ensure equality for all its constituent peoples and all its citizens.
