EU provides 115 million euros in aid for refugees in Greece

The European Union is giving humanitarian organizations 115 million euros (129 million dollars) in new aid to help improve conditions for refugees in Greece ahead of the quickly approaching winter, the bloc's executive said Saturday.

"The European Commission continues to put solidarity into action to better manage the refugee crisis," EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Christos Stylianides said during a visit to the country, which has borne the brunt of recent migration waves towards Europe.

Thousands of migrants and asylum seekers became stranded in Greece after countries further north closed their borders.

"The new funding has the key aim to improve conditions for refugees in Greece, and make a difference ahead of the upcoming winter," Stylianides said.

The money will be used to improve existing shelters and construct new ones; fund cash and voucher schemes so that refugees can cover their basic needs; help refugee children access education; and provide assistance to unaccompanied minors.

Overall, the EU has provided more than 1 billion euros to help Greece tackle migration challenges, the commission said.
