Greek island firefighters work to limit blaze to southern half

The southern part of the Greek island of Thasos is in flames as efforts to control a forest fire continue, Greek broadcaster Skai reported Monday.

Efforts are now aimed at making sure the fire does not spread to the northern part of the Aegean island. Hundreds of firefighters with support from firefighting aircraft and helicopters have been called in for the effort.

Four firefighters have been injured so far. Several island residents have also required treatment for smoke inhalation and breathing problems. Several cars and homes have been destroyed.

Schools remain closed on the island, even as pupils return to lessons across the rest of Greece. A visit by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is also expected at some point Monday so he can get an overview of the situation.
