Indictment raised for murder of 27 ethnic Croats in Bosnia

Prosecutorial authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have raised an indictment against a former Bosniak officer of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Army, Enver Buza, for war crimes committed against ethnic Croats in the village of Uzdol.

Buza (aged 69) is charged for war crimes committed against civilians by troops he commanded during the 1990s war in the village of Uzdol when 27 children, women and elderly people were killed, prosecutorial authorities in that country reported on Tuesday.

Buza commanded troops known as the Independent Prozor Battalion of the Bosnian Army which on September 14, 1993 staged an attack on Uzdol and surrounding villages populated by ethnic Croats.

The indictment notes that Buza's troops killed 27 Croats, including children, women, the elderly and disabled, in an "exceptionally cruel and atrocious way."

The youngest victim was a boy aged 10 and the oldest was an 87-year-old woman. The wounds on the bodies indicated that they were killed with firearms and cold weapons.

The information about the crime committed in Uzdol was so disturbing that a special UN envoy immediately requested an investigation by authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Vatican was immediately informed of the atrocity.

The indictment against Buza notes that he was personally present when the murders were committed and that he did not take any steps to have the crime investigated and the actual perpetrators prosecuted.

The indictment is yet to be upheld by the Bosnia and Herzegovina State Court.
