Kosovo opposition disrupts parliament in another tear gas attack

Kosovo police expelled the political opposition from parliament on Friday afternoon after its members again disrupted a government session with tear gas, the Koha.net news portal reported.

Parliament in Pristina was scheduled to reconvene later on Friday, the report said.

The opposition has been routinely obstructing parliament proceedings with tear gas since early October, seeking to block the implementation of an agreement with Serbia on expanded autonomy for predominantly Serbian municipalities in mostly Albanian Kosovo.

The agreement was brokered by the European Union as part of normalization talks between longtime foes, Pristina and Belgrade.

Opposition leaders are calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Isa Mustafa and for planned elections, currently set for 2018, to be brought forward.

Earlier in the week, thousands of demonstrators marched in Pristina, backing pro-opposition demands for Mustafa's departure. The protest ended without major incidents, unlike others in recent months, which turned violent.

Albanians, who make up 90 per cent of the Kosovo population, fought a war against Serbian rule in 1998-99, leading to the Kosovo province declaring its independence eight years ago.
