Montenegrin president accuses Serbian counterpart of interference

Montenegro's President Filip Vujanovic has criticised his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolic over his statements about Montenegro's NATO membership bid, accusing him of interference into Montenegro's internal affairs.

Nikolic said in an interview with the Russian "Sputnik" news agency that unlike Montenegro, Serbia was not a state with which one can play, and claimed that "Montenegro is intentionally annulling its independence by accepting everything only to ensure its admission to NATO." Nikolic was quoted as saying that by opting for membership of NATO, Montenegro also opts for disagreements with all who disagree with the Alliance.

This prompted Vujanovic to criticise Nikolic for attempts to meddle with the Montenegrin affairs.

Vujanovic, however, states that he does not believe that the insults hurled at him and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic were not made intentionally by Serbia's President and hopes that Nikolic's outburst would not affect the bilateral relations.

PM Djukanovic said on Friday he was surprised by Nikolic's claims, and added that he would continue to work on improvement of the Montenegro-Serbia relations and would not be deterred by such statements.
