Montenegro parliament passes resolution supporting NATO membership bid

Montenegro's parliament on Friday evening adopted a resolution on the support to the country's accession to NATO whereby lawmakers confirmed their commitment to Podgorica's European Union and NATO membership aspirations

The resolution, proposed by the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and its junior coalition partners,  was adopted by a vast majority of MPs after a two-day discussion.

The document describes NATO membership as Montenegro's strategic goal that will ensure the stability and security of the country and preservation of its territorial integrity and sovereignty as prerequisites for reinforcement of the rule of law and market economy.

In mid-May Montenegro signed a protocol in Brussels on accession to NATO and once all 28 member states have ratified the protocol, Montenegro will become the newest, 29th member of the Alliance.

The protocol was signed by Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and the foreign ministers of NATO's 28 member states.

The signing of the protocol enables Montenegrin delegations to participate in NATO meetings, however, without the right of vote for the time being until the ratification process is completed.
