Refugees again using route through Vojvodina

The reception centre for the temporary accommodation of refugees in transit in Subotica, the northern part of Vojvodina, Serbia, is receiving migrants again and in the night between Saturday and Sunday, it accommodated about 60 migrants who were not allowed to cross into Croatia at the Sid/Tovarnik crossing.

They will be catered for in that centre for the time being, local media outlets reported on Monday.

The Serbian Social Policy Ministry's official Nenad Ivanisevic was quoted as saying that signs with instructions in languages used by migrants will be set up in Subotica, following a rising number of migrants being rerouted to that city.

Before Hungary put up a barbed wire fence along its border with Serbia in mid-September, thousands of migrants headed towards west Europe via Serbia and Hungary in the summer months. The razor wire fence forced the migrants to start using a new route across Croatia and Slovenia in the autumn.

According to local media, over the weekend the Hungarian police caught 150 migrants who had been cutting the barbed wire while trying to enter Hungary illegally.

Serbia has announced a possibility of dividing migrants who are entering Serbia at its border with Macedonia into those classified as economic migrants and as refugees fleeing the war, however, no concrete deal with neighbouring countries has been hammered out, according to the local media.
