Russian-Serbian military exercise taking place near Belgrade

A joint exercise of the Russian and Serbian air forces called BARS 2016 is taking place at the Batajnica military air base near Belgrade on October 9-15, Serbia's RTS public broadcaster said on Thursday.

It is a continuation of a joint exercise held in Astrakhan, Russia last year and was officially announced by the Russian Defence Ministry on October 9, without stating when it would begin and where it would be held. Neither did the Serbian Defence Ministry, only briefly announcing on Thursday that Serbian military helicopters would perform flying tasks as part of the BARS 2016 military exercise in the evening.

The first ever Russian-Serbian military exercise, SREM 2014, was held in Serbia two years ago. Until 2012, there was virtually no military cooperation between the two countries and several exercises have been held since, RTS said, adding that of the 24 military exercises held in 2015, only two were held with Russia, while the rest were held with Western partners.
