Serbia anti-graft crackdown nets dozens, including ex-minister

As many as 79 people were arrested in Serbia in the night between Friday and Saturday as a result of an anti-corruption crackdown campaign, and those arrestees are business people and current and former office-holders at the local and state level, Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic told an extraordinary news conference in Belgrade on Saturday.

He stopped short of identifying the arrested people, however the media have reported that some of the high-profile arrestees are a former minister  Slobodan Milosavljevic, and a former director of the state agency for the fight against corruption, Zorana Markovic, as well as businessman Zeljko Zunic, who is the owner of the "Beohemija" company.

Apart from them, seven assistant ministers, public companies' executives, several municipal heads, financial directors and businessmen have been netted in this anti-corruption sweep.

According to Minister Stefanovic, they have defrauded Serbia's budget, the budget of the province of Vojvodina, an insurance company, the Smederevo steel-mill and some municipalities of over 100 million euros.

The damage was caused by money laundering, abuse of office and some other financial wrongdoings for several years.

The minister reassured the public that the anti-graft campaign would continue.
