Serbia to hold snap elections in April

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic confirmed Tuesday that he will call early elections halfway through his term, saying he will seek support for his pro-EU agenda.

The polls will "most probably" be on April 24, Vucic told Serbian state TV RTS.

"It will be a referendum on whether Serbia wants to be a modern European country in 2020, whether it wants the future or the past," he said.

With the opposition fragmented and on its back foot, Vucic's Progressive Party is the overwhelming favourite and is striving for a two-thirds majority it narrowly missed in the last polls.

Earlier Vucic said he needed a full four-year term for reforms that will put Serbia firmly on the path to EU membership.

A far-right, anti-Western nationalist during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, Vucic moved toward the centre over the past seven years and became a fervent supporter of Serbia's membership in the European Union.

His Progressive Party currently dominates the weak, fragmented opposition and appears set to repeat its strong March 2014 victory, when it won 158 of the 250 seats in parliament, eight short of the two-thirds majority required for key legislation.

Elections had been scheduled for the spring of 2018.
