Serbia will apply reciprocal measures on Balkan route

After Slovenia's decision to close the Balkan migrant route, Serbia will agree on measures regarding migrants with the European Union, reciprocally applying them on its southern and eastern borders towards Macedonia and Bulgaria, the Interior Ministry said.

Croatia notified the Serbian Interior Ministry today that as of midnight Slovenia would start applying a new entry regime to the Schengen Area and that it would not receive migrants without valid visas and passports.

That means the Balkan route is "practically closed" and Serbia cannot afford to suffer the consequences of such a decision by Slovenia by becoming a collection centre for refugees, the ministry said.

Serbian Labour Minister Aleksandar Vulin said earlier today that Serbia welcomed the Brussels negotiations with every country on the migrant route and the efforts to solve the refugee crisis. "We will honour every joint decision by the European partners and we will honour the right of these people to seek protection on Serbian territory too," he said on a visit to the migrant reception centre in Presevo in south Serbia with senior UNHCR officials.
