Severe storm causes floods in western Greece

Severe weather on several Greek islands early on Saturday has led to flooding that caused serious damage in the west of the country, according to local media.

The storm, which began late on Friday and continued into early Saturday, hit the islands Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Corfu, as well as the peninsula Peloponnese.

On the island of Kefalonia, cars and motorbikes were swept away by flooding caused by the storm, while homes and shops suffered severe water damage, local broadcaster Athina 984 reported.

The streets of Athens were also flooded on Friday night during a short but intense storm that knocked over trees and caused blackouts in parts of the city.
