Slovenian border police on Tuesday discovered nine illegal migrants in a freight truck at the Macelj-Gruskovje border crossing, the Maribor police administration reported on Wednesday.
While conducting a routine inspection of the lorry with Turkish registration plates, police discovered six illegal migrants from Afghanistan and 3 from Pakistan who were hiding among the truck's cargo and who were en route to Italy. The illegals were sent back to Croatia.
Police in the Slovenian town of Kopar on Monday found 12 illegal migrants from Syria and Iraq in a Turkish cargo ship that had sailed into that port. The migrants were hidden with the aide of some of the ship's crew.
All 12 migrants have applied for asylum in Slovenia while criminal proceedings are being launched against the ship's crew members.
