Wigemark says Bosnia could join EU in 10 yrs

European Union Special Representative and head of the EU Delegation in Bosnia Lars-Gunnar Wigemark has said in an interview with the Bosnian edition of the Vecernji List daily that Bosnia and Herzegovina could join the EU in ten years, underscoring the importance of the role of Croatian MEPs in the realisation of that objective.

I believe Bosnia will be a full member of the EU or close to that objective. I say this because there is no other way. Croatia is now a member, Serbia is on that path, as is Montenegro, Swedish diplomat Wigemark said when asked where he saw Bosnia in ten years.

He explained that in the next two months, Bosnia must meet several criteria after which the Council of the EU would ask the European Commission to voice its opinion regarding Bosnia's membership application and Bosnia would be given an analysis with recommendations about the necessary reforms.

Currently there is interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina within the EU. We expect Bosnia to be a priority during Slovakia's coming six-month presidency over the bloc, the Swedish diplomat said, adding that the role of Croatia's MEPs was very important for Bosnia's drawing closer to the EU.

Croatian members of the European Parliament are very important because they turned attention to the situation in Bosnia and the position of Bosnian Croats. It is very important, however, that MEPs from other countries and not only those from Croatia speak about Bosnia, for example MEPs from Sweden, Great Britain, Germany and France, he added.

As a reward for the successful reform implementation, in the next two years Bosnia can expect a one billion euro financial package from the new stand-by deal with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Commission. This financial injection in the public sector should launch investments worth EUR 500 million.
