Osijek boasts of largest water-mill in Croatia

Osijek has been adorned with a new tourist attraction - the largest water mill in Croatia on the River Drava near the city's centre and the replica valued at almost two-million kuna is part of the "Miller's Path" project financed as part of the IPA cross-border cooperation between Croatia and Hungary.

The European Union contributed one million kuna for the project and the remaining HRK 800,000 was secured by the City of Osijek.

The replica of the mill was publicly unveiled on Friday and in two month's time it will be open to the public for viewing.

"This will certainly be a huge tourist attraction and reminder of the milling industry in Osijek. In the early 19th century, during the golden age of mills, there were more than 60 such mills on the Drava river," Osijek Mayor Ivan Vrkic underscored at the presentation.

The last mill in Osijek was shut down in 1944 and this project will help revive that golden era when Osijek became the a hub for wheat and bakery products. Today it is still home to the largest Croatian and regional wheat producers and manufacturers.

The new mill is hand-made and the mill's designer Stanislav Davidovic said that he came up with the idea of the project in 2008 and then presented it to the city authorities and last year when the EU approved the project it became a reality.

The mill will primarily serve for educational purposes because it will demonstrate how flour was once produced and can be a good example of promoting the use of renewable energy to produce green products as well as presenting an interesting tourist attraction.
