VW sees lower US sales in April, while Audi is looking up

Embattled German car maker Volkswagen saw a drop in April US sales of 9.7 per cent compared to the same month last year, the company reported Tuesday.

VW sold 27,112 vehicles in the US in April 2016, as compared to 30,009 in April 2015. For the year to date, US sales are down 11.7 per cent.

The Golf, Passat and Jetta models all saw their numbers drop, while the Tiguan stood out as one of the few VW models to see notably increased sales compared to April 2015.

The world's second largest car manufacturer has long had difficulty in the US market, and its woes were compounded after the September 2015 revelation that some of its diesel vehicles had been outfitted with manipulative emissions software.

The company has since taken those models off the market.

VW's sister company, Audi, had a better month, selling 17,801 cars in April, up 5.8 per cent from a year ago. Overall in the first four months of 2016, Audi has seen a 5.6-per-cent increase in US sales.
