Coach Terim: Turkish team affected by terror attacks at home

The recent terror attacks in Turkey have not left the national football team unaffected, coach Fatih Terim said on the eve of their first Euro 2016 match on Sunday in Paris against Croatia.

The latest incident came earlier in the week when 11 people died in an attack apparently directed against the police. It was the third major attack in Istanbul this year, and there were also two deadly car bombings in the capital, Ankara.

"It is impossible not to be influenced by what's going on in the country," Terim told a news conference.

"We had bad days in the qualifiers. Sometimes there were incidents on matchday, sometimes a day before. It influences all of us. We are part of our country, me and the players. But whatever the circumstances we shouldn't surrender."

The players are obviously influenced. I hope we won't see these sad scenes again."

Turkey nonetheless qualified directly as the best third-placed team for the tournament in France where security is very tight after the November 13, 2015 attacks in which 130 people died.

"With our culture and history and literature and football we are friends with their big culture and history. We are grateful for their hospitality. They are doing their best, I am grateful," Terim said in the direction of the hosts.
