320 refugees staying at Slavonski Brod transit centre

The consequences of the new regime for managing migrant flows and the closing of the Balkan migrant route are already visible and at the refugee transit centre in the eastern Croatian city of Slavonski Brod, where there have been no new arrivals of migrants since Saturday, there are currently 320 people who do not meet criteria to be let pass on to Western European countries.

"We have adjusted our activities because migrants now stay longer here. There is more work for our team for psycho-social assistance, we have expanded our services, primarily children workshops. The worst thing is that those people do not know what will happen with them next. Our teams are trying to calm them down," Croatian Red Cross coordinator Ivan Usmiani said.

The camp currently accommodates primarily people from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, he said.

Asked when those people would leave Slavonski Brod, Usmiani said that he did not have that information.

He said that the migrants were well cared for.

Since the refugee crisis spilled over to Croatia in mid-September 2015, a total of 658,068 refugees and migrants have passed through the country, including around 340,000 who have passed through the transit centre at Slavonski Brod. Since November, six refugee children have been born in the city hospital.
