71st anniversary of establishment of National Government of Croatia marked in Split

The 71st anniversary of the establishment of the National Government of Croatia was marked by a wreath-laying ceremony outside the Old City Assembly building in Split, where that government was formed on 14 April 1945.

Wreaths were laid before a memorial plaque at the entrance to the assembly building by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic's envoy Andro Krstulovic Opara, Split Mayor Ivo Baldasar and the vice-president of the Split City Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists, Pjero Baranovic. Wreaths were also laid at a separate ceremony by a delegation of the Split branch of the Socialist Workers' Party and a delegation of the city branch of the "Josip Broz Tito" association.

Krstulovic Opara said that by sending him as her envoy to the ceremony, President Grabar-Kitarovic confirmed the importance of the establishment of the National Government of Croatia 71 years ago, which, he said, was not only an important date in the history of Split "but one of the more important dates in Croatia's more recent history as well."

"I was the youngest deputy in the Croatian parliament in 1990 when we adopted the Constitution which clearly described the Anti-Fascist Council of the National Liberation of Croatia (ZAVNOH) as an expression of the Croatian people's statehood and love for freedom whereby it took its place among historical victors. This decision, to form the National Government of Croatia 71 years ago, constitutes the legalisation of ZAVNOH's decisions," Krstulovic Opara said, among other things.
