8.8 million credit and debit cards in circulation in Croatia in June

At the end of June 2016 there were 8.8 million credit and debit cards in circulation in Croatia, an increase of 1.2% over June 2015, and 77% accounted for debit cards, an international conference on technologies, standards and smart card applications in financial, trade and other sectors said in Opatija earlier this week.

At the end of 2015, over 3.3 million citizens of Croatia, or 79%, had at least one payment card, while 52% had only a debit payment card. The proportion of contactless payment cards was 19%, up 6.8%.

At the same time there were 4,418 cash machines across the country and 103,404 point of sale machines.

Zrinka Petroci of the Croatian National Bank (HNB) said that only about 51% of credit cards were used, while 44% were not used at all, and about 5% were blocked for various reasons.

At the end of 2015, compared with the same time of 2014, the total number of transactions made with payment cards increased by 7% and the value of transactions went up by 4.7%. Seven transactions were made per card per month on average.

Croatians mostly used their payment cards to buy goods and services (63%) and to draw cash from ATMs (28%).
