Activists again demand renaming of Zagreb's Marshal Tito Square

The "Krug za trg" (Circle for the Square) civic initiative, on Saturday held its tenth annual protest rally demanding that the present Marshal Tito Square in the capital of Zagreb should get another name.

Dozens of supporters of this initiative carried banners with messages that Tito was a mass murderer and terrorist and that Tito whom they labelled as an oppressor did not deserve to have squares named after him.

They accused the authorities of failing to comply with the parliament's resolution on the removal of traces and symbols of all totalitarian regimes.

A few years ago, the "Circle for the Square" civic initiative, backed by 500 public figures, sent a petition to the Zagreb City Assembly to change the name of the present Marshal Tito Square to Republic of Croatia Square and notified the state authorities and the Mayor about it,

"Krug za trg" has been trying for several years to remove symbols of totalitarianism from public spaces in Croatia, adding that it had addressed more than 10 requests to the City Assembly to rename Marshal Tito Square.

Activists of this association insist that the fight for removing all symbols of violence, crime and totalitarianism from public spaces is not only a fight for Croatia but also a fight for democracy, freedom and justice.
