Agriculture minister says frost damage HRK 960 mln

The Agriculture Ministry has obtained the final estimate of damage to crops caused by frost in late April, and it amounts to around HRK 960 million for the entire country, Agriculture Minister Davor Romic said in Varazdin on Monday.

The estimate has been forwarded to the Finance Ministry, Romic said, adding that he and his Austrian, Slovenian, Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian counterparts would together inform the European Commission of the extent of the damage.

"We expect to receive in June information from the EC as to what we can expect. We are also working on a number of national measures to help those who have suffered extensive damage," said Romic.

Asked when farmers could expect to receive funds from the Rural Development Programme for increasing their products' added value and for the restructuring, modernisation and increased competitiveness of farms, Romic said Croatia was in the final stage of absorbing those funds.

"A European Commission audit and our procedures have been aligned now. We have reported to the EC what exactly we have done and we have forwarded everything to AFCOS (Anti-Fraud Coordination Service) which is carrying out its final inspections. We expect to receive its opinion this week. Regardless of everything, as for agricultural producers who have submitted applications in line with the relevant regulations and who have launched investments, the money will not be withheld and it will be intended for them," said Romic.
