AmCham donates HRK 830,000 cheque for mine clearance

The American Chamber of Commerce in Croatia (AMCHAM) and US Ambassador to Croatia Julieta Valls Noyes on Tuesday presented local authorities in Karlovac County and officials of the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR) with a cheque valued at HRK 830,000 for mine clearance in that county.

The money was collected last year at a donor dinner and was doubled by the US government. Part of the funds have already been expended to clear mines in Josipdol Municipality.

Ambassador Valls Noyes the USA was proud to support Croatia in mine clearance adding that since 1999, the US government had donated almost 30 million dollars, which was used to clear 16 square metres of mines.

Through everyday cooperation with partners in Croatia we are working to strengthen common security, advance common prosperity and offer support for joint values, she said.

AmCham Executive Director Andrea Doko-Jelusic said that mine-suspected areas were a security problem and halt any form of economic activity, she said, adding that they were proud that the project directly impacted the life of the local community in the process of normalising life and achieving a better economic future.

The head of the Croatian Office for Mine Action, Dijana Plestina, said that in the "foreseeable future all mined farmland areas would be cleared of mines thanks to the European Fund for Rural Development," and thanked donors for their donations.

Karlovac County Prefect Ivan Vucic said that in the period 2001 to 2014 HRK 8.13 million had been collected for mine clearance.

There are still 495 square kilometres of mine suspected area in Croatia. In Karlovac County around 55 square kilometres are still covered in mines.
