Appointment of new acting HRT director priority for parliament

The chair of the Parliament's Committee on Information and Media, Goran Maric of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), said on Tuesday that the appointment of a new acting director of Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) was a priority for the parliament and that the parliament would deal with the matter after it confirmed the new government.

Maric made the statement at a session of the Information and Media Committee after Goran Beus Richembergh of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) warned that the public broadcaster had been left without its chief executive after Sinisa Kovacic's extended term of acting HRT director expired at the beginning of October.

"There is, beyond doubt, a management crisis at the HRT and it is a result of bad legal regulations, of the HRT Act, which should definitely be amended," Maric said after the session of the committee which greenlighted amendments to the HRT Act put forward by the Bridge party. Under the amendments, the HRT is to conduct debt collection procedures in cases of unpaid subscription on its own rather than having subscribers pay legal firms and public notaries millions of kuna annually for such procedures, as is now the case.

Maric said that the parliament was expected to put forward the proposal to appoint the new HRT acting director next week.
