Around 2,000 people waiting to enter Croatia at Berkasovo

Around 2,000 refugees and migrants were waiting to enter Croatia at Berkasovo, Serbia, around noon on Saturday, having been brought there by bus from Presevo on the Serbian-Macedonian border, but refugees and migrants were also arriving in taxis that could be seen along the Sid-Berkasovo road.

According to volunteers who were helping the numerous refugees by giving them food, blankets and toiletries, around 4,000 refugees arrived at Berkasovo during the night alone and most of them entered Croatia at Bapska.

After on Friday the Serbian and Croatian ministers of the interior, Nebojsa Stefanovic and Ranko Ostojic respectively, agreed on greater involvement of the Serbian police in dealing with the refugee situation at Berkasovo, the Croatian Ministry of the Interior said the implementation of the agreement started on Saturday.

Even though buses with refugees and migrants continue arriving, Serbian police officers are in Berkasovo and are letting migrants pass on to the border with Croatia in a controlled manner. The migrants are then received at Bapska by Croatian police and are transported to the temporary reception centre Opatovac, where they are registered and sent by bus or train on to the border with Slovenia.
