Bartholomew says Jasenovac new martyrs are heroes and saints of entire Orthodox Church

Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople said on Saturday while officiating the liturgy in the Orthodox Church in Jasenovac that ancient Serb Orthodox and Jasenovac new martyrs were heroes and saints of the entire Orthodox Church.

"Be under the crown of Serb martyrs, the tree of blessed Serbs," the patriarch said, calling on Serb Orthodox believers to take the path of their ancestors, heroes and saints.

He underscored that hundreds of thousands of his Orthodox brothers were killed and had suffered in Jasenovac.

He called on the faithful not to forget their martyrs who cannot be a reason for revenge but for peace.

The Orthodox liturgy was attended by Pakrac-Slavonia Episcope Jovan, Serb Serb Patriarch Irinej, numerous episcopes from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia.

The liturgy was attended by representatives of the Serb ethnic minority in Croatia, Milorad Pupovac and Vojislav Stanimirovic.
