Bonuses to CEOs in public companies unacceptable, says minister

Minister of Environment and Nature Protection Slaven Dobrovic of the Bridge party on Monday said that it was unacceptable for management personnel in the state-owned forest management  company - Hrvatske Sume - to be paid a bonus and that it was necessary to prevent that practice otherwise Croatia would never pull out of the crisis.

"Croatia will never pull out of the crisis if we allow such behaviour. I believe that they should be ashamed for asking for such bonuses and even more so they who signed such deals," Dobrovic said.

Minister Dobrovic spoke about the Waste Management Plan and underscored that it was essential even though some interest groups were opposed to it. "We would like to implement the Waste Management Plan if there is enough will, perception and understanding, even during the term of this government," he said.

He added that a consensus should be expected over its adoption and that it would absorb European Union funds to actively implement measures for a circular economy. "Without that plan, we will virtually be in a stale-mate and remain in the same spot," he said.

Bridge leader and outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Bozo Petrov on Saturday assessed demands for a bonus that was brokered in a deal between CEO of Hrvatske Sume, Ivan Pavelic with former agriculture minister Tihomir Jakovina in the Social Democratic Party led government, as shameful.

"It's simply shameful that a CEO of a state-owned company in Croatia who fired 1,100 workers and managed to sell some raw material without any clear strategy be paid a bonus of several million kuna," Petrov said then commenting on media reports of the bonuses.
