Brexit can have incalculable consequences for Europe's stability, says HDZ MP

ZAGREB, June 24 (Hina) - Gordan Jandrokovic, an MP of the ruling HDZ and chair of the parliamentary European Affairs Committee, said on Friday that Great Britain's referendum decision to leave the European Union could have incalculable consequences for Europe's stability.

"I'm concerned about political stability in the EU which has been shaken in recent years by the economic and migrant crises and the strengthening of radicalism. Such a decision will only additionally strengthen such trends in other EU member states, so I think that ahead lies a period of big political instability and strengthening of radical movements on the left and the right," he told Hina.

"The EU has always rested on the Germany-France-Great Britain triangle. The loss of that balance can cause big change in terms of regrouping of partnerships and alliances in the EU, which would be an additional instability factor. This can have incalculable consequences for the stability of the European continent," said Jandrokovic.

He said Brexit would not have a direct negative impact on the Croatian economy because Croatian-British trade was low. "In that respect, Croatia will share the fate of other EU member states. However, we will certainly feel political instability."

As for EU enlargement, he said enthusiasm for it had dropped in recent years anyway and that Brexit would further slow down the accession of Croatia's neighbours because the EU would have to deal with a new political and institutional instability.
