Bridge MP says there's no subsidy for newborns

Ivan Lovrinovic, a member of Parliament from the pro-reform Bridge party, has called on Social Affairs and Youth Minister Bernardica Juretic and First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko to stop promising that the government would give EUR 1,000 for every newborn child, noting that the kuna is the national currency.

Juretic said on Wednesday that in the 2016 budget there would be money for a proposal to give 1,000 euros for every newborn child, which Karamarko had been announcing throughout the election campaign.

"I am asking Minister Juretic and First Deputy Prime Minister Karamarko to stop promising that the government will give 1,000 euros per every newborn child. Firstly, we have no money for that, and secondly, the kuna is our national currency and we should use it, therefore we should say 7,500 kuna," Lovrinovic wrote on his Facebook account.

Apart from money, the government should offer a whole set of measures designed to boost population growth, from a law on motherhood to tax reliefs, Lovrinovic said, warning that the adoption of those measures should be stepped up as there was a danger that a large number of women of reproductive age could leave the country in the meantime.
