Bridge opposes privatisation of strategic companies

Bridge MPs Ivan Kovacic and Miro Bulj on Thursday objected to the government's intention to privatise companies that were struck off the list of strategic companies during its conference call on Wednesday.

"I think that some companies were removed from the list of strategic companies to facilitate their sale however, it doesn't take much know-how or expertise to sell ACI or Podravka. Why wasn't it decided to sell companies that are in a poor financial situation where workers aren't being paid?" Kovacic questioned.

He told reporters in parliament that he certainly would not support any such thing.

"Why isn't anyone smart enough to try. Today there was talk about the Immunological Institute. Efforts should be made to put it to use or to rehabilitate the Kamensko factory so that the women from Kamensko can be paid," he added.

Bulj too objects to the privatisation and considers that the ACI (marinas), Podravka (food concern) and other companies the government intends to privatise, have to be the foundation of Croatia's development.

"I absolutely object. Companies like Podravka which can serve as a pillar of support for the development of agriculture are absolutely strategic and we should not have to import raw material from Hungary while our farmland is lying idle. Podravka can be raised. It can be even better and be a development company. It's easy to sell the family gold, try and sell plastic," said Bulj.
