Bridge says neither Milanovic nor Karamarko should be PM-designate

The Bridge party is sticking to its election demand for the implementation of necessary reforms and one of the conditions for that is that neither the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) nor of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) can be the prime minister-designate, Bridge's negotiator Ivan Lovrinovic said after a meeting with SDP representatives in Zagreb on Wednesday.

"Our position is that neither Mr Milanovic nor Mr Karamarko should be given the mandate to form the new government because we believe that Croatia should take a new course and this entire reform process requires a new person," Lovrinovic told the press. "This would help homogenise the electorate and create a new atmosphere in society," he added.

Lovrinovic said he was satisfied with the meeting because "representatives of the SDP are aware of just how serious the situation is." He reiterated Bridge would stick to its most important demands, particularly the five most important reforms on which the party focused in the election campaign.

Asked what Bridge would do in the event that both major coalitions decline its proposals, Lovrinovic said Bridge would apply "a funnel system" to reach a solution with the side that showed guarantees that we can carry out our reforms.

SDP negotiator Branko Grcic said the meeting was an opportunity to exchange opinions and clarify certain positions that were heard on Monday at a joint meeting.

"I believe something can be gained from every dialogue, this one too. We discussed additional options as well as this possible funnel system that professor Lovrinovic spoke about in finding a solution. We discussed a number of possibilities, but I cannot speak about details. I can say that these talks were really necessary because we constructively discussed all possible variations, acknowledging Bridge's positions and the positions of our coalition and where the line is that cannot be crossed," Grcic said.
