Butkovic: Govt. won't do anything unlawful regarding executive appointments

Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Oleg Butkovic said on Thursday that the caretaker government would do nothing unlawful regarding already advertised calls for the appointment of public companies' executives.

"The calls were advertised based on decisions by assemblies held before the prime minister was impeached and the decisions (on the appointments) will be made by the next government anyway," he told reporters as he arrived for a government meeting, the first since parliament gave it a vote of no confidence last week.

Last Thursday, parliament gave a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic, toppling his cabinet. On Monday, parliament decided to dissolve on July 15 and an early parliamentary election is likely due in September.

Under the law, a caretaker government cannot adopt decisions on appointments. Calls for the appointments of management board chairs and two members in three public companies were advertised by the State Property Management Office in the Official Gazette last Friday, a day after the government fell. The companies in question are the HZ Infrastruktura rail company, the Hrvatske Autoceste motorway operator and the Hrvatske Ceste road operator.
