Butkovic: HDZ most likely to seek PM's impeachment

The ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) will most likely seek the impeachment of Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic in Parliament, the party's deputy leader and transport minister, Oleg Butkovic, said on Saturday.

A motion for impeachment will be filed in case Oreskovic ignores the recommendation and demand by HDZ leader Tomislav Karamarko that he step down, Butkovic said in an interview with the N1 television channel before meetings of the HDZ's presidency and main committee in Zagreb.

After all things that have occurred, the HDZ, as the largest political party in the country, cannot allow such irrational things to be happening, he said. First, the Bridge party, a junior partner in the ruling coalition, demanded that Karamarko step down, and then Oreskovic, who was nominated as prime minister by the HDZ, also demanded his resignation, he added.

The HDZ won the most votes in the last parliamentary election and will dictate the situation in Parliament, Butkovic said.

Asked about the possibility of further cooperation with Bridge, Butkovic said that although everything was possible in politics, he doubted that the present government would survive.

The procedure is clear: if the government falls, that is, if the prime minister is given a vote of no confidence, a new majority will be assembled and we think we can do that, Butkovic said.
