Vice president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) Oleg Butkovic told reporters on Tuesday that "in difficult moments the HDZ had always made the best decisions and this is what the party will do this time as well," saying that Andrej Plenkovic was only one of the possible candidates for the new party chief.
Before the press conference at which Tomislav Karamarko resigned as HDZ chief, Butkovic asked reporters to, despite huge interest, allow the HDZ to resolve its problems and the situation it found itself in "within the family". "The HDZ had always made the best decisions in difficult moments and it will do so this time as well," Butkovic said.
He stressed it was yet to be seen who would run for the new party president. Asked if he supported the HDZ MEP Andrej Plenkovic as the new HDZ chief, Butkovic said Plenkovic "is only one of the candidates who announced his possible candidacy for the party president."
Butkovic declined to answer whether he had ambitions to lead the HDZ.
After that Tomislav Karamarko held a news conference announcing that he was resigning as HDZ president.
"I resign as HDZ president. Reasons are clear and multi-layered (...) I promised the party that I would manage to form a parliamentary majority and I have failed," Karamarko said ahead of the session of the HDZ presidency.
